The Big Day!

Thanksgiving Day First off:
• Prepare stuffing for the turkey (if you're stuffing the turkey) and/or the dressing to cook on the side.
• Prepare your vegetables for cooking-clean, peel and chop. Cover the ready-to-go vegetables and put them in the refrigerator. Boil potatoes and mash them; they can be reheated just before serving.
• Stuff the turkey and get it in the oven according to the schedule you calculated yesterday.Then:
• After the turkey is in the oven, you should have a little time to relax away from the kitchen.
• Just before the turkey's done, begin cooking fresh vegetables, and get anything else that needs to go into the oven ready (stuffing, storebought rolls, etc.)While the cooked turkey is resting:
• Put a foil tent over the turkey. You now have about an hour to do the remaining cooking.
• If you have a pan of stuffing/dressing on the side to bake, put it in now.
• Warm whatever needs to be warmed, including mashed potatoes, rolls, soups and casseroles.
• Cook frozen vegetables.
• Make the gravy.
• Put all the food on the table or buffet. Don't hesitate to press guests into service to put food in bowls, open wine bottles, fill glasses and dish up the cranberry sauce.

One week ahead:
• Shop for hardier vegetables like butternut squash, carrots, potatoes, parsnips and turnips.
• Buy heavy cream now; it's hard to find right before Thanksgiving.
• If necessary, wash and iron linen or polish silver. Dig out your turkey roaster and platter and any serving dishes hidden away in closets or high shelves. Decide what serving dishes you need for each food entry.Three days ahead:
• If you have a frozen turkey, clear a space in your fridge and put the bird in now to defrost.
• Clean the house, or put non-cooking household members in charge.
• If you're having a lot of guests, you may want to set up the table(s) and make sure you have enough space and chairs.Two days ahead:
• Make pumpkin pies or pumpkin cheesecake, rolls, breads and cornbread for stuffing. Refrigerate pies; you can always warm things up again before serving. Apple or pecan pies don't do well in advance, though; the crust doesn't stay flaky and crisp.
• Make things that can sit for two days in the fridge, like soups and cranberry sauce.
• Assemble casseroles (like sweet potato or green bean); they can be stored uncooked in the fridge and baked on Thanksgiving. One day ahead:
• Set the table now so you won't have to worry about it later. • Set up a coat rack with extra hangers.
• Do any remaining baking, including apple or pecan pies.• Buy your salad greens and perishable vegetables. Wash lettuce leaves now, dry well, and store by packing them in paper towels in a plastic bag in the refrigerator.
• If you ordered a fresh turkey, pick it up from the butcher.
• Calculate your cooking time (and cooking order) for tomorrow.
• Figure out what can't be cooked along with the turkey in the oven, either in terms of temperature or space. Plan to cook those things before or after the turkey is done, or on the stovetop while it's cooking; better still, make them today.

Two Weeks Till Thanksgiving Check List

Check your equipment - do you have enough tables and chairs for all your guests
Dishes - Are you using dishes or buying paper plates ( I have to be honest - the best gift I ever gave myself was to buy the really nice Thanksgiving Paper Plates and cups for our dinner) Make sure you have enough plates, salad plates, dessert plates.
Silverware - polished forks, knives and spoons or nice disposable ware.
Glassware - water glasses, main drink glasses
Linens - tablecloth, napkins - make sure you have what are you are using
Centerpiece - What are you using for centerpiece, napkin rings etc.

Three weeks ahead:
• Prepare your guest list; confirm how many people will be there.
• Find out if your guests have any special dietary needs.
• Place a rental order, if necessary, for tables, chairs, glasses, plates and flatware.Two weeks ahead:
• Decide on your final menu and collect the recipes you'll need. Select some dishes that taste good at room temperature, so you won't have to worry about your hot entree getting cold, or your cold dessert melting.
• Assign cooking projects to family members who offer to help.
• Order your fresh turkey, or buy your frozen turkey and put it in the freezer. If buying a whole turkey, plan on one pound per person. If you're buying just the bone-in breast, plan on 3/4 pound per person.
• Order or pick up beverages, or delegate this to your non-cooking guests.
• Shop for non-perishable goods now. You can buy flour, sugar, brown sugar, corn syrup, canned pumpkin, packaged stuffing and cornbread mixes, rice, and fresh or frozen cranberries, all before the crowds descend.

November 1 - Write thank you e-mails to some people who have really touched my life and helped me in ways they do not know.

November 2 - I thought all day about what I could to help people. It was a busy day and I was discouraged because I hadn't taken the time to serve anyone. Then I realized - I served my home today! It was Monday - my house day, I did laundry, planned menu's, made supper, talked to several of our children, planned Family Home Evening and watched our newborn grandson so our daughter could participate. It was remarkable to really think about how I had served everyone in our family, I felt so much peace and so much love for these people who call me mom and grandma mimi!

November 3 - Our daughter Kalea and I are involved in an ornament exchange. She needed help getting her ornaments done because she has a newborn baby, so we have spent the day together listening to Christmas music making ornaments - what a treat today has been!

November 4 - I was able to spend a few minutes with a friend on the phone who needed someone to talk to. What a unique activity this is. I do give to people daily but it has been mindless. This challenge has been so good for me to think everyday about what I am going to do to serve others.

November 5 - Today I gave our dog a bath. He is a Rotweiler and loves baths. He was realy past due! He loves to be touched and scrubbed and is totally giddy when he dries off. He runs around like crazy outside whether it is grass or snow and rubs himself all over - I can't help but laugh at him!

November 6 - I was able to help one of our daughters get a baby shower gift ready for a friend who lost her husband in the summer when she was 2 months along.

November 7 - Today I cleaned out my husbands closet. It needed a little TLC. I also visitied a friend who is leaving for the National Guard boot camp in the morning to say good-bye and I played Mario Kart with my darling little 4 year old grandson.

End of Week One Thoughts - What an interesting thing it is to ponder as I wake up what I am going to do for someone else this day. Many things I already do, but without the dedication and love that needs to be a part of the giving - this has helped me with that.

November 8 - Today we went and saw our little 4 year old grandson sing at church. He was so excited to have us come and be with him. What a treat for us!

November 9 - Today I talked to someone with on the phone that needed really needed a listening ear.

November 10 - I babysat our darling 3 month old grandson so his mom (our daughter) could help her older sister.

November 11 - I visited with a friend who needed some encouragement

November 12 - I set up a service project with a local charity that our business will be involved with.

November 13 - I went shopping and I smiled at everyone I met. It was interesting to see how mnay people responded. In the past when I have done this, the responses were much greater, I know many people are hurting right now. I prayed for all I passed this day.

November 14 - I finalized all plans, handouts and invites projects for a craft day for the sisters in our church.

End of Week Two Thoughts

I was reminded of my personal mission today. I had forgotten and didn't know I needed to be reminded! I feel so humbled by this. I believe without the focus the past 2 weeks of "Who can I serve today?" I don't know that this would have come to me. My heart was in the right place to receive.

November 15-22 - This week is one post. My husband had a cardio-vert done on Tuesday. My focus this week has been on serving and helping him. He is pretty independent, but I have tried to make sure he is ok. well fed and cared for.
I also was in charge of our church Christmas Craft Day yesterday. So this week I have tried to get all the details ready, handouts, and other things ready for our event.

End of Week Three Thoughts

This week I have had such a change of thoughts. This whole experience has been such a personal edification time. I knew I needed to serve more, I didn't know it would be such a purifying experience.

November 23 - Today I spent some time with my siblings via phone. So nice to talk to each of them. I am truly part of a remarkable family. I also e-mailed my cousnis.

November 24 - Our daughter and her hubby arrived from Washington State and I held my darling 3 month grandson all afternoon.

November 25 - Our daughter and hubby on their way to their Thanksgiving celebration at his parents house. I spent the afternoon, finishing up an ornament exchange I have volunteered to be in charge of. Such talented people, so grateful to have them share their talents with me.

November 26 - Today is Thanksgiving. I am cooking for my family. I love this day, I love cooking and cleaning and making a nice day for them!

Projects with the Little People in Our Lives

Woo Hoo - It is Thanksgiving Time!
Making Memories with our grandchildren is really important to me. It is an interesting thing that happens when you become a grandparent - your life suddenly totally revolves around these little people. Here are a couple projects I am doing with our 2 oldest grandson's.

We are making this wreathe - one for their house and one for mine. Filled with their darling little handprints.

In a couple of weeks we are making fun turkey cookies.

Time for Thanksgiving!
I don't have as many Thanksgiving Decorations as I do Halloween or Christmas. I use alot of the Fall decor that I have and leave it up September through Thanksgiivng.

Here are pictures of a few of the Thanksgiving things we have intermingled with fall leaves and pumkins.

I made this turkey with a bunch of my friends at Enrichment Day at church. When I pull him out I always think about them and the fun we had creating these all together.

This "Give Thnks" was also created at Enrichment at church several years ago.

This has been up since September, I just add or take away things to match the month.

I decided to move around some of the Fall and Thanksgiving Decorations
I moved the centerpiece that was on the table for fall into the living room and put it on the piano. (See September and Fall Decor.) I added a few Thanksgiving mini's to it and took away the Halloween mini's. It worked great in the dining area, but we had to move it whenever we had a big dinner. This will be a better place for it.

These are two mop pilgrims that are on our entry room table. Wouldn't be Thanksgiving without them. They have been around for a long time! You never realized how these little projects turn into such tradtions for your family.

This the the shelf over the couch in our family dining room. They are little indian bears we painted in FHE years ago.

This is my hutch.

It looks a little washed out in the picture, but with the fall dishes it is quite beautiful. The t-cups are some of my great grandmothers. Several dishes are from several generations back. So glad to get these out so we can all enjoy them.

This doll was given to my mom from my dad with her engagement ring on the dolls wrist. It deserves a place of honor in the hutch!

Oreo Turkey Cookies
Ingredients - 2 double stuff Oreo's, 1 malt ball, 6 candy corns, and icingInstructions - Separate one Oreo - this is the base. Put malt ball in center and lay other cookie on it's side behind it. Flat Turkey Cookies

INGREDIENTS1 roll (16.5 oz) Pillsbury® refrigerated sugar cookies1 container (16 oz) chocolate creamy frostingCandy cornOrange decorating icingBlack decorating gelMiniature candy-coated chocolate baking bitsDIRECTIONS1. Heat oven to 350°F. Bake cookies as directed on roll. Cool completely, about 20 minutes.2. Spoon chocolate frosting into resealable food-storage plastic bag; seal bag. Cut small hole in bottom corner of bag. On each cookie, pipe frosting on outer edge of half of cookie. Arrange candy corn over frosting for feathers.3. Pipe orange icing onto each cookie to resemble turkey face and feet. Use orange icing to attach baking bits to turkey face for eyes. These adorable (and edible!) Pilgrim hat favors will decorate any pretty holiday table. What You Do Plain Pilgrim Hat Wrap red fruit leather around the middle of the ice cream cone, right under the lip of the cone. Wrap one end of the fruit leather over the other, pressing the ends to make them stick together. Cut a piece of the yellow fruit leather the same width as the red fruit leather, then lengthwise into a small square. Place the yellow square on top of the red band, forming the "buckle" on the hat. Using the small paintbrush, paint a little bit of Karo syrup onto the yellow square and sprinkle with the yellow sugar.Chocolate Covered Pilgrim HatIn a microwave-safe bowl, melt the candy melts at 30-second intervals, stirring frequently, until melted. Cornucopia Treats
I will look for a picture.We make these every year and I have NEVER taken apicture of them.Steam the end of a sugar cone using steam from a t-pot and curve upwards in the shape of a cornucopia.Let it cool then add runts.You can use icing and write each persons name on the side for place cards.Cover with saran wrap and tie ribbon around it it to keep candy in or you can let it spill out onto the table.
